Another Suspicious Package Addressed to CNN Intercepted in Atlanta

Suspicious package addressed to CNN intercepted

This image obtained Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018, and provided by ABC News shows a package addressed to former Central Intelligence Agency head John Brennan and an explosive device that was sent to CNN's NY office.

The FBI did not identify to whom the package was addressed, but CNN President Jeff Zucker announced that a suspicious package addressed to the cable television network was intercepted Monday at an Atlanta post office.

It's unclear whether Sayoc is suspected to be responsible for the most recent suspicious package sent to CNN.

It wasn't immediately clear if the incident was tied to other parcels containing pipe bombs that were mailed to CNN's NY office and prominent Democrats last week, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation said the package looked similar.

After Sayoc's arrest Friday, authorities warned that more packages might still be circulating through the mail system. It is not known at this point if this newly discovered package was sent by Sayoc before his apprehension by authorities or if it was sent by a copycat mail bomber. Since then, the network has instituted additional mail security.

If America hoped President Donald Trump would scale back his attacks on his perceived opponents after they started finding in bombs in their mail, we were disappointed.

The Atlanta Police Department said officers responded to the call about the package at 9:38 a.m.

Authorities have said the previous packages contained possible bombs made of six inches of PVC pipe, a small clock, a battery, wiring and what authorities termed "energetic", or possibly explosive, material. He's expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.

An initial hearing is set Monday afternoon in Florida federal court for 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc, who faces five federal charges.

Turchie added that investigators were fortunate Sayoc had previously been arrested and, therefore, had fingerprints in the system.

Brooklyn-born Sayoc is being prosecuted in NY, so his Florida hearing will likely be brief and process-oriented.
