One student shot at Butler High School in Matthews, authorities say

Matthews Police confirmed Butler High School is on lockdown after one person was shot

Butler High School in Matthews, N.C., was put on lockdown early Monday after a student was shot on campus inside one of the buildings, reports a Facebook post by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

A student was killed after a shooting at a North Carolina high school Monday, according to local media.

Police say that another student is already in custody, and the school is secure.

Officers recovered the weapon used in the incident, officials said.

Jatwan Cuffie, 16, faces a murder charge in the death of 16-year-old Bobby McKeithen, according to authorities at a press conference on Monday.

The conflict between the shooter and his victim began with a bullying incident, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox.

Wilcox said that many students witnessed the shooting, and counselors and psychologists were available.

A student resource officer on the campus responded to a commotion near the school's cafeteria at 7:14 a.m., where he located McKeithen after he was shot. The lockdown at the school was lifted around 9:15 a.m. "What makes it doubly hard is that it was one of our students who was the shooter". When they arrived to find their children absent, dozens of parents took matters into their own hands, marching over a highway overpass and crossing police barricades to assemble at the doors of the school. "As fear took over, the young person brought a gun to solve the problems".

The school briefly went into a lockdown as the wounded student, who was also not identified by police, was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

'There were many kids in the hallway when this happened, ' he said. During the confusion, many students texted their parents, knowing only that there was an active shooter on campus. "We're incredibly sad, and we're sorry for this family", Wilcox said.

Guardians and parents were advised of the incident via email and telephone calls.

'It sounded like a balloon but louder, ' she said. Classes were be held for students remaining on campus, the district said.
