Highlights from the opening round of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai

A stunning five-shot swing over the final two holes of round three saw Tony Finau regain control of the WGC-HSBC Champions as defending champion Justin Rose slipped back into a tie for second.

Schauffele began the week in Shanghai by celebrating his 25th birthday.

Defending champion Justin Rose failed to return to the top of the world rankings, finishing third on 10-under following a level-par 72.

Brooks Koepka, who was making his debut as the world number one, made one birdie and one bogey in his round of 72.

"Even when I was signing my card I was like, "Oh, wow, I actually went birdie-birdie to get in the play-off". He and Finau finished at 14-under 274. Finau shot a 71 Sunday, while Schauffele had the low score of the day with a 68.

Rose, who seized on a final-round collapse by 54-hole leader Dustin Johnson to win previous year, looked sharp but was happy to escape with a 69 after he closed both the front and back nines with bogeys.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow", said Finau after closing his round of... Rose played the final two holes at Sheshan International in 11 shots, compared to Finau's six. He was stunned when his second shot in the par-5 18th spun off the front of the green and into the water, forcing him to scramble for par at the turn instead of an easy birdie or better.

West Australian Brett Rumford finished on one-over-par 73 after a chequered run of birdies and bogeys, while Jason Norris carded a similarly frustrating 74. Then, his 4-iron to the par-5 18th was too far right and tumbled down the hill and into the water.

Finau's only victory was in 2016 at the Puerto Rico Open, an event held opposite the Match Play in Texas.

"I'm playing well, feeling good".

Sharma, who was 80-80 for the first two days, opened superbly from the 10th with three birdies in first five holes, but then had a start-stop-start kind of a round. Of course, it's extremely unusual this would occur on the 72nd hole with players in contention to win.

Patrick Reed overcame windy conditions to claim a two-shot lead at Shanghai event with an eight-under-par first-round 64.

But he capitalised on the Englishman's own mistakes down the stretch to stay on track for just his second PGA Tour win.

Home favourite Hsu Wei-ling bounced back from a first hole bogey Saturday to share the lead with the USA's Nelly Korda going into the final round of the LPGA Taiwan Championship.

It was a harsh disappointment for the long-hitting, 29-year-old Finau, who was impressive all week and lead after the second and third rounds.
