Cricket Australia takes a pounding for being 'arrogant and controlling'

Cricket Australia reviews'confronting according to board member Mark Taylor

Cricket Australia stands by their original verdict of imposing bans on David Warner and Steve Smith for one year and on Cameron Bancroft for nine months.

The players' union has also called for the sanctions to be looked at again as, in their view, the ball-tampering in South Africa was in part the result of a "culture and system" which put too much pressure on the players to win.

"Common sense, common decency, basic fairness, proportionality and natural justice demand that the punishment is reduced".

The ball-tampering revelations plunged Australia's team into crisis earlier this year.

The scandal involved the three players conspiring to use sandpaper to illegally alter the flight of the ball in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Perhaps the greatest irony of David Peever's performance on Monday was that when confronted with accusations of "arrogance", the chairman refused to directly answer questions and instead determined that the review was never meant to be about "dwelling on the negatives".

Peever said some of the responses had been "at times hard to read and in some instances, hard to agree with", although Cricket Australia respected the review's findings. The culture of winning at any cost fostered by CA was evidence enough to reconsider the quantum of bans handed.

However, despite all this, the majority of respondents backed CA's heavy sanctions to Smith, Warner and Bancroft.

The bans on Smith and Warner will be in effect till April 2019, while Bancroft's suspension ends in January.

"David is the first to have come out of the corporate world rather than out of the cricket world and I think in this crisis that's what's shown here", Speed added.

David Warner (left) and Steve Smith received lengthy bans following the ball-tampering episode. We've got to make Australians proud.

Despite only weeks ago saying goodbye after 17 years in the top job, James Sutherland escaped on Tuesday with barely a mention on a day when it was decreed he had overseen a poisonous culture.

Then it's believed the players' association and CA could find a compromise whereby the strict 12-month penalties are relaxed to at least allow them to play domestic cricket competitions the Sheffield Shield and BBL.

The vanquished coach denies overseeing a culture where his players abused team staff and doesn't agree game plans and strategies focused on Warner being an attack dog for the Australian team.

"CA is already well advanced in some areas with more than half of the recommendations in development or already implemented before we commissioned the review", he said.

"There's a range of different options and there's many different ones which have been spoken about, not just by us but by others", he said on SEN.

But CA is holding firm on the bans, with any reductions thought unlikely.
