Khashoggi murder: Saudi Arabia 'sent experts' to cover evidence

The killing has already severely tarnished Saudi Arabia’s global reputation.— File

Almost a month after Khashoggi's murder, Son gave his first public remarks on the journalist's death during a SoftBank earnings presentation in Tokyo, Recode reported.

The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and officials from his ruling AK party have reiterated their belief in recent days that the "highest levels" of the Saudi establishment must have ordered the journalist's killing, as well as allegations that Saudi Arabia is incapable of carrying out an independent and unbiased criminal investigation.

Saudi Arabia's conflicting accounts of Khashoggi's killing have prompted an worldwide outcry against the world's top oil exporter, upending the young crown prince's global image as a reformer.

The sons of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi have said they have faith in Saudi Arabia's King Salman's promise that those responsible will be brought to justice.

Salah Khashoggi, 35, said he relied on news reports for updates about the investigation into his father's death. On Monday Turkey's vice president said investigators should look into a theory that the body was dissolved in acid.

"We believe that the two individuals came to Turkey for the sole objective of covering up evidence of Jamal Khashoggi's murder before the Turkish police were allowed to search the premises", the official said.

"This will happen. Otherwise Saudi wouldn't have started an internal investigation", he said.

Prince Alwaleed was freed from Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton Hotel along with other royals, senior officials and businessmen, most of whom reached financial settlements with the authorities.

In late October, the Istanbul prosecutor announced that the murder had been plotted in advance: Jamal Khashoggi was strangled "as soon as he entered the consulate general, after which his body was dismembered and destroyed".

The two men travelled to Turkey for the sole objective of covering up evidence of the killing before Turkish police were allowed to search the premises, the official said in comments relayed by electronic message.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is cutting ties with a charity chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, becoming the latest western organization to take a step back from Saudi Arabia and the Crown Prince himself following the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on October 2.

Abdulaziz Almoayyad, a Saudi human rights activist told Al Jazeera from Dublin that due to the global outcry over Khashoggi's murder, Saudi Arabia is now treading more carefully. Turkish authorities said the team dismembered Khashoggi's body and disposed of it.

But he pointedly failed to absolve Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of responsibility for unleashing a "death squad" against the outspoken Saudi journalist.

The murder has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the United States and other western allies. Saudi officials reportedly considered him part of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian political organization that some countries consider a terror group.
