Protests to protect Robert Mueller planned nationwide after Jeff Sessions firing

Matthew Whitaker will temporarily replace Jeff Sessions

In an editorial for CNN.com previous year, Whitaker made clear that he believes the president's personal finances are off limits to special counsel Robert Mueller.

One organizer for Capital Area Indivisible, Jessica Gorton of Readfield, has helped organize other area events for the group, including the 2017 Women's March.

The swift firing may have also been a way for Mr Trump to get ahead of any efforts from the newly-empowered Democrats to reopen the House intelligence committee's investigation into ties between Mr Trump's campaign team and Russian Federation.

Trump has said for months that he wished to replace Sessions, but lawmakers and administration officials believed that firing the attorney-general before the midterm elections would have had negative consequences for Republicans in tight races.

Demonstrations are taking place in more than 1,000 US cities and towns on Thursday evening-beginning at 5:00 PM (local time)-in response to President Donald Trump "installing a hack" to oversee the ongoing investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The departure was the culmination of a toxic relationship that frayed just weeks into Sessions' tenure, when he stepped aside from the Russia investigation because of his campaign advocacy and following the revelation that he had met twice in 2016 with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. She compared the current situation to the so-called Saturday Night Massacre in 1973, when President Nixon fired a special prosecutor and accepted the resignations of the attorney general and deputy attorney general.

"According to the chain of command, (Rosenstein) should be the attorney general", Gorton said. They were aimed at protesting the ouster of Sessions, whose recusal allowed Mueller to operate unimpeded, and as a warning that Whitaker should not interfere with the investigation.

Indivisible member Eileen Kreutz, of Industry, traveled to attend the protest after hearing about it through communications from Indivisible.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker once argued that an American president had such broad executive power that they could order any federal investigation be stopped without obstructing justice.

"We can not let this president tell Bob Mueller what to do", Durkan, a former USA attorney, said before leading the crowd in a chant of "Let Bob do his job". We're mobilizing immediately to demand accountability, because Trump is not above the law.

"He must not touch Robert Mueller", he said. She said she called on people to contact legislators and form a public outcry about Sessions' resignation that will have to be addressed. "And that attorney-general doesn't fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt", said Mr Whitaker in an interview with CNN past year. "This is a moment for all of us to come together and preserve the rule of law in the U.S".

Follayattar said the Portland protest exceeded her expectations. "It is very heartening that we will soon have an opposition party in the House".

Gorton added that the protest was a success, even though political activists are probably run ragged from Tuesday's elections. And we have seen results.
