US Congress welcomes trailblazers as record number of women and minorities elected

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez votes in her district in the Bronx

Female candidates won congressional seats and governorships in record numbers Tuesday night. While stiff historical headwinds were blowing in Republicans' faces, the opposition correctly read the political needs of the moment and recruited an array of strong female candidates who were primed to exploit widespread suburban dissatisfaction with the president. White women are increasingly being discounted as "women" in the feminist movement merely because so many of them still vote for Republican candidates.

Ayanna Pressley became the first black woman elected into the MA state Congress.

At a state level, Democrat Janet Mills of ME and Republican Kristi Noem of South Dakota were elected as their state's first-ever female governors, and another 3,379 women were their parties' nominees for legislative seats. Here's a list of some of those firsts, which we will keep updating as results come in. An A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot, Lt. Col. Martha McSally is also the first female in the Air Force to serve as the commander of any combat aviation squadron, to include fighters and bombers. Over 230 women were on the general-election ballots in House races this time. Now, instead of coming up with some long-winded answer about robbing Peter to pay Paul, she just says, "Ah, we'll deal with it later". In the first major race called Tuesday night, Lou Leon Guerrero was elected as Guam's governor, becoming the first woman to do so. She will replace Keith Ellison, himself the first Muslim elected to Congress. Omar fled from civil war in Somalia and arrived in the U.S.at the age of 14.

On the one hand, "Donna Shalala has been a prominent successful Democrat who has been proud of her Arab Lebanese heritage, but that has not been a defining characteristic of her career" Mr Telhami told The National. The district is already solidly blue, and even though her victory was all but guaranteed after winning the primary, Ocasio-Cortez kept campaigning.

She'll be joined by Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib - also a Muslim and the first Palestinian-American to serve Congress.

'I need a minute, ' she said. She has represented that district since 2006. That number is up from the 84 women now serving in the 115th Congress. Flipping these so-called "split districts" divided between Democratic presidential support and a Republican representative was a key element of the Democrats' strategy to take control of the House in 2018, according to analysts.

Friendly reminder: The women's march leadership has a serious bigotry problem.
