Ogden protesters rally against Trump's AG switch, threat to Mueller probe

Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions

A group of 18 US state attorneys general Thursday urged the new Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to recuse himself from an ongoing investigation on the alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 USA general elections.

Clovis, the 2016 Trump campaign national co-chairman, said in a May radio interview that he has been interviewed by the special counsel's team and had testified before the Mueller grand jury.

"We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States", Trump tweeted.

Activists across the Bay Area Thursday evening were protesting President Donald Trump's replacement of his attorney general after embattled former Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned on Wednesday. A spokeswoman said Whitaker would oversee all matters under the department's jurisdiction, including the Russian Federation investigation.

Congressional Democrats have already called on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation.

Donna Perdue, who organized the rally, said they were there to tell the president that even in Valparaiso they have a voice.

The departure was the culmination of a toxic relationship that frayed just weeks into Sessions' tenure, when he stepped aside from the Russia investigation because of his campaign advocacy and following the revelation that he had met twice in 2016 with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. For 18 months Rosenstein has allowed Mueller a generous budget and very broad mandate.

At the same time, Trump repeatedly emphasized in his remarks to reporters that he did not know Whitaker, whom he tapped to replace Sessions on a temporary basis.

Whitaker has his supporters too, including a US senator from Iowa, Joni Ernst.

World Patent Marketing Inc.is now the subject of an ongoing criminal inquiry by the FBI, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Thursday's letter to the Justice Department was signed by Oregon's Ellen Rosenblum and Washington's Bob Ferguson and their colleagues in Hawaii, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Vermont, Rhode Island, North Carolina, California, New Jersey, Minnesota, Illinois, Delaware, New York and MA. He has, for instance, talked down the Mueller investigation on a number of TV talk shows.

McConnell said he thinks the president will "pretty quickly" send the Senate a nominee for a new attorney general.

The president commented to reporters as he left the White House for a trip to Paris to commemorate the end of World War I. "He's the acting attorney general". "I'd like to know the truth", said Pat Noga, an Emmaus resident. Serving as a special counsel does not require Senate confirmation by statute.
